A RETURN TO V8 ENGINES? Opinions on FOM's Proposed 2030 Regulations
Some might be thinking this is something that'll have to happen. Some might be thinking that this is pointless and that F1 should be chasing the latest and greatest tech. But maybe, in a way, you could actually combine the two. Slow burning fuels that are cleaner than standard petrol? Might be a market for that.
The motor insustry is at a weird point. EVs and Hybrids were the way forward but now synthetic fuel is something that might be here. But then, LPG was supposed to be the next big thing but never caught on. Probably because of the cost of entry.
So then, let's look at how this might pan out. Will it happen or is it too soon after 2026?

FERRARI WASN'T ROBBED! Opinions on the 2024 6hrs of Spa

A lot of Tifosi saying that the rules were broken, Porsche was helped, that Ferrari is the real winner and so on. But until it was pointed out in a comments section, I had no idea that there was a rule in place that allowed the FIA to do such a thing. Which is good. Because sometimes there can be an almighty amount of time required to repair a barrier, or maybe 5hrs of the race are red flagged ...
BROKEN PROMISES AND BROKEN DREAMS! The Demise of the Prost GP Team (1997-2001)

There's a few pictures out there that show the Prost car, I think from 1999, where it looks absolutely glorious in that metallic blue. but at the same time, a good looking car doesn't usually equate to a good performing one. Notable exceptions being the Lotus 49, Williams FW18 and the McLaren MP4/23. Although that's just a sample and not every single one. So when Alain Prost arrived on the grid...

British American Racing arrived on the grid in 1999 to a bit of hype. A lot of money, plenty of know-how, the remains of Tyrrell and they had Jacques Villeneuve to boot. If they’re going to do away with hybrids completely (even though I highly doubt it’ll actually happen) then I’d prefer it if the engine regulations were a bit more free. Like in the late 80s when the turbo era was on its way out they capped the boost pressure to slow the turbos down and allowed the lower end teams to use V8s and V10s as a cheaper alternative

    This regulation could also be a small step towards an even newer future redesign, they could consider many of the following changes: v angle (60, 72, 90), engine layout (i4, i5, i6, ,vr6, v6, v8, v10, v12, w12), forced induction (na, turbo, twin turbo, compound turbo, supercharging, twin charging), valve control & number (vvt, vvl, camless, 4+), engine & piston material (cgi, other new/exotic alloy, steel, forged, cast), compression ratio (any), fuel injector (number, number of holes), spark plug (number or none at all, material), transmisson (cvt, dct). I think there's actually many design changes that could be provided towards the manufacturer to design the engines that they would like, and also engine design evolve constantly (1900s i4 were quite rightly different than 2020s i4).

    If this is true then FOM should just bin off 2026 regulations and keep the current regulations until 2030. It doesn't make a lick of sense to bring in those 2026 regulations and then switch to V8s four years later. I would like to see synthetic fuel explored further though. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that is the fuel that is used in the WRC and WEC so I wouldn't be opposed to F1 looking into it too. (Also does WWE still refer to their fans as the 'WWE Universe'? I thought they would have scrapped that now Vince isn't there anymore. It was a lame term in 2014 and it's still lame now!)

    The distinctive engine sound was a big part of the F1 experience and it was a given. No matter what happened in the race there was something impressive to talk about. Nowadays that isn't the case anymore and there is no valid reason for it. F1 engines weren't that much road relevant anyways so dropping the MGU-H and the turbo for more cylinders won't matter to the industry. As for batteries being the future, it's not going to be the case unless some revolutionary discovery happens in the field which is quite unlikely. Consumers and especially companies started to realize this and that's why these kind of talks started.

    A couple of years ago I found a channel that has been uploading "classic" seasons(?) I ate up from '01 to currently '05 and it has been crack for my nostalgia. Yes, the sound does the job, but I think I'm more drawn to the fact that the races weren't about having to manage degrading tyres/energy/drs. The only good thing F1 has done in the last decade its reliability. Imagine '03 and '04 if Williams and McLaren would'n blown up every other race! Love your stuff! Cheers from Argentina!

    Bring back *V12s* ! Honestly, I was never disappointed by the sounds of the hybrid era cars. It's the elitism of not letting Andretti in and blocking the view of the track from residents' view in vegas, the cost cap hypocrisy of changing the regulations on a whim and adding too many races, and, the pay wall that meant I haven't seen a race live on tv in possibly a decade when I used to watch religiously in the terrestrial tv coverage days, that made me eventually think "what's the point?!" So, this year, I deliberately unsubscribed from any f1 specific channels on RUclips and ignored what is going on in f1 this year. I don't know how many races there have been, where they've been or who's won what. I know Monaco is on around this time because it's always in May after the cannes film festival. But my point is I don't care about the future of f1 anymore. WEC and IMSA are thriving right now and that's where I'm getting my motorsport fix from these days.

    Drive to survive makes it a lot more exciting than it actually is...people say early 2000's were amazing...but Schumacher won 5 titles in a row...the dominance of teams.....ferrari, Mercedes, red bull....make it boring....V6, V8, V10, V12....whatever, the sport needs to be closer..more competitive...more manufacturers... engine noise won't make a difference if the show is crap

  • @recarsion
    @recarsion 11 часов назад

    If we want noise it also needs to be naturally aspirated. Just listen to the Porsche 963 LMDh car, it's a V8 but the turbo makes it sound completely unimpressing. Also apparently the current V6s have slightly uneven firing orders because of a 90 degree V-angle but no split crank journals. If they allowed that they might sound slightly better. After all there are many 6 cylinder engines in road cars that sound great so it doesn't have to suck And btw, on the topic of the V10 era being boring, just look at the stats, until Schumi's reign it was someone different winning almost every year and there were great championship fights. How many good years have we had since 2014, maybe like 3 if I'm generous? Of course not every race and not every season was exciting back in the 90s either but that's just how motorsports are. At least there was a technological arms race so it was never a given who would be fastest even in different parts of a season, never mind next season. This simply doesn't exist anymore. F1 is dying a slow and painful death because of cost caps, no testing during season, and an overly strict formula that kills innovation, and despite all this we don't even have an even playing field like a spec or BoP formula does, it's the worst of both worlds.

    Another great video and wonderful points, but I think there is something untrue about the narrative that people only want the old engines back for noise and nostalgia. A bigger part is that a sport is most entertaining when it's relatable. I don't mean like "that's the same as my car on the road", but more "people try to race car fastest". No one loves DRS, but at least it's a clear physical thing. But no one gets excited about cars harvesting and releasing extra energy, because it's all hidden computer tech. We don't want a tech demo where we have to wait for the computer readout later, when surely the simple racing of cars is better, so we can just enjoy the sport viscerally. As brought to us by our eyes, not as brought to us be AWS. So I'd rather whatever the best mix of simple/fast/competitive is, so the driving can speak, and one engine is surely better than a power unit of many parts. Must say though, again, beautifully researched video and basically 99% agree on everything 😅

    As Someone who grew up watching 90's Motorsports like F1, DTM/ITC, BTC, Ralley etc. and enjoying it back then. Compared to today were i ve 0 interest in it, and i dont think it is the Sound, Sound is just a small Part except u are present at the Track then it has more Impact. For Me its the Sensation of Speed, i feel like Motorsport got way to clean. Cars are much more stable, have more Grip, better Aero etc. while the Power has not increased. From an Oberserver Perspective its like watching a "Carrera Race". There might be Some other major Changes needed to get young People interested in to the Sport. Maybe change the overall Duration of the Race or split it into 3 Parts/Races. Shorter and more Action packed and inbetween the Brakes maybe some other Entertainment or Race Class going. 2H Races with little Action and Overtakes will not excite young People. Anyways, good Video. And i agree, these constant Rule Changes are a Middle Finger to the Teams and Manufacturer.

    The problem with changing the rules in order to stop a team being dominant is that it stops being a competition any more. It becomes Sports Entertainment, as you mentioned with the WWE. When Floyd Mayweather was going 50-0 in his career, the boxing orgs didn’t make him wear heavier gloves and ankle weights in order to give the other guy a chance. When Tom Brady was winning his rings with the Patriots the NFL didn’t change the rules every year to try and ban the clever plays the Pats were-oh wait they did do that. Dominance is part and parcel of pure competition. If the other teams whine about another team being better, you just have to tell them to Git Gud.

I do agree that F1 should be a no holds barred formula, pushing the cars to go round as fast as possible. I hope the result in Miami isn't an exception. As for "Drive to Survive," I've lost interest. • @FerralVideo
    @FerralVideo 16 часов назад

    Honestly I'm disappointed by the killing of the MGU-H. They really do add efficiency to the vehicles. If we abort them out of F1, then the technology will end up completely stillborn and it'll never "trickle down" into anything. This made even more complicated by the double-speak that F1 claims they're removing it to intice new teams, and then immediately backtrack this and make it nearly impossible for new teams to join. As for "road relevance", F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport, not the pinnacle of road going crapboxes. Also, am I the only person in the room who doesn't hate the sound the current engines make? That said, I agree with the idea of opening the engine formula. The entire hard strict rule on what you can use to power your car just isn't in the spirit of F1 pushing the limits of innovation. If you want more efficiency, just... set tighter efficiency rules and let the teams solve the problem themselves. I also agree with the commentary for smaller, lighter cars. That'll go further towards helping the racing than anything involving V10s. I think I speak for the majority of motorsports fans when I say I'd rather awesome racing with cars that sound like Hoovers than processional boring laps being lazily run by V10s. Then again that's probably why I've watched more Formula E races than I have Formula 1 races..... and before you at me, yes, Formula E cars sound awesome in their own unique way.
